It is truly uncanny. Every year, about mid-September, the aisles of every supermarket and discount retailer start to turn pink. Like some sort of Christmas for cancer-fighting, everything you see in one way or another has to do with the fight against breast cancer. For some reason, someone, somewhere, determined that the color pink, when tied in to a ribbon, symbolizes the fight against breast cancer, and that the month of October is just the perfect month for fighting that particular fight.
Sensing cynicism? You betcha. By my cynicism is totally justified. Read the history later, but for now, just know that my sister and I have a new October tradition. We text each other photos of absolutely absurd things that have mysteriously turned pink with the season. “Guess what, sis! _____ fights breast cancer!”. Fill in the blank here…it could be anything from toilet paper to M&Ms. As the month goes on, we one-up each other to see who can find the most absurd item. The crème de la crème is that item which has actually been found to CAUSE breast cancer, but is in fact colored pink, which must mean it fights breast cancer.
Awesome.
