Ok, I'll admit it, I've already failed on the basic premise of this blog...one post per day for the month of October. Well, I'll just say I spent the second day of October doing "research" at the football game and we'll leave it at that!
It was, in fact, the Jaguar's and NFL's "Crucial Catch" game to promote awareness of breast cancer. The players were wearing pink cleats and gloves and had pink towels. The cheerleaders wore pink outfits and carried spiffy new pink pom poms. Even the stadium staff were wearing pink shirts...oh, and the padding around the goal post was also pink. And of course, the ZTA sorority girls were passing out pink ribbons at the gate (my "no thanks" was pretty much met with a horrified look from a few little co-eds!).
I did a little bit of research in to this annual event. This year, all proceeds will be going to Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, the American Cancer Society's signature event. Money is raised by auctioning off the used pink equipment of various players. Sweaty Yeremiah Bell signed skull cap, anyone? Gross.
All I could really think about was how much it must have cost to deck everyone out in pink equipment. I wonder if the NFL had just stroked a check for that amount, would it have been greater than what this effort will raise? I get "awareness" but at what point are we aware already? "Awareness" of the existence of a disease is really only going to get us so far.
Oh, and don't think the pink firetruck was going to miss this event.
